If you’re looking for a job, you might be doing so under the assumption that many require a college degree. However, that’s not always the case. In fact, there are countless rewarding job opportunities that require only a high school diploma and a commitment to hard work.

So how can you find them and start working? Here are some tips to keep in mind during your search:

NETWORK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

Even in today’s tech-driven world, networking and word-of-mouth are still the top ways jobs are filled. So reach out to those you know to ask about potential jobs where they work. Tell them about the type of position you’re looking to find, what kinds of skills and experience you have, and whether they can pass along your resume to their hiring manager.

APPLY TO THE RIGHT POSITIONS.

There are plenty of positions out there that do not require college degrees. However, for some, it’s a necessity. Don’t set yourself up for failure by applying to those. Instead, search for opportunities that are truly a good fit for you in terms of your technical and interpersonal skills. Also, if a job posting states a college degree is “recommended” or “desired,” then it’s not required, and you can still certainly apply.

MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE JOB.

When you’re applying, be sure to draw connections between the job listing’s requirements and your background and skills. To do that, read through the job description carefully and make a list of reasons you’re a good fit. Then create a “Summary of Experience” at the top of your resume that showcases those specific areas and ties them to the job opening.

ENHANCE YOUR SKILLS.

Even if you don’t have a college degree, if you have some coursework on your resume, it will stand out to the hiring manager and show you’re taking steps in your education. You can sign up for online seminars, classes at your local community college, or industry conferences. These will all offer opportunities to network and learn, helping you find a job faster.
